You want to have a natural birth, a birth that goes as smoothly as possible; one that is quick with minimal lasting effect on your body. You want to feel connected and centered; you want to give birth without fear. You want to know how to assist both your baby and your body in the birthing process, but the messages out there are quite confusing and sometimes even scary.

If you’re like most of my clients, this is not your first birth. You had every intention in the past to do it right in order to have an amazing natural birth. You’ve heard that women who use the Paula Method can connect with their bodies on a deeper level and that they feel powerful and trust themselves fully. You might be curious to know how it is different from other methods and techniques.

Three main things set the Paula Method apart from other approaches. First, we understand and know how different muscles in the body are connected to one another. For example, when we say that your eyes, mouth and facial muscles activate your uterus, we teach you exactly what to do and what will happen as a result. We also are pelvic floor experts. I will teach you how to protect your pelvic floor through pregnancy and birth. This will help your postpartum recovery as well. But mostly, we know how to establish a deep connection with the body. I will help you recognize your body’s cues so you will easily know what to do during birth, without anyone’s guidance.

Should we decide to work together, we will go through a twelve-session program.  You’ll work in complete collaboration with your body. I will teach you simple, effective exercises to practice during your pregnancy to keep your body strong yet relaxed and prepare you for a connected, self-directed birth.

I will teach you how to breathe better, move effortlessly using your body more effectively, and stay active when labor begins. You will learn specific exercises to use during contractions and exercises to use in between. You will learn how to birth gently, without straining or pushing, while protecting the pelvic floor. We will practice these exercises many times in numerous birth simulations. We will prepare for your desired birth scenario (we can even have sessions in the birthing pool if you’re planning a water birth). It will all be very individualized and centered around you.

How I work and what to expect


THE FIRST SESSION

We’ll begin by going over your health questionnaire and you’ll have the opportunity to explain your situation to me in more detail. Then, we will begin to work. We’ll focus on basic exercises that you can begin using on your own. The first session, is 90 minutes.


WHAT WE WILL DO IN THE SESSIONS

The work I do is non-invasive and usually done without physical contact, which makes it possible for us to meet online.

During the sessions you will keep changing positions according to your body’s needs. Movement is important during birth too. Please have your space ready to move around, lie down, sit, lean over, or stand.

If we meet online, you’ll need a soft exercise mat or a firm mattress to lie on.

In order to support your body in the most gentle and loving way you may want to have pillows, bolsters, a yoga strap, and an exercise ball with you if you happen to have them (don’t purchase them if you don’t).

I’ll explain the exercises and you’ll perform them. Each exercise is very gentle and pleasant to do. Our work will always be within your comfort zone. No sweat or strain is involved. You’ll frequently be asked to describe what you’re feeling. At the end of each session you’ll have a list of a few simple exercises you can practice on your own.

WHAT TO WEAR

Your clothes should be comfortable, so that they do not restrict either your breathing or your movement. You may also want to remove glasses and jewelry during the session. You can be bare foot or wear socks.


PRACTICING AT HOME

In addition to our one-on-one sessions, I encourage you to practice what you have learned at home. The more you practice, the more prepared you’ll be. Your goal is to be as prepared as possible for birth, and to use the exercises without having to think about them and trying to remember them. At the end of the day it really depends on your dedication.


HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE

To prepare for an optimal pregnancy, birth, and postpartum healing, I recommend taking 12 lessons. If you’re having a high risk pregnancy, or need more support we can meet longer. I’m here for you for as long as you wish for me to assist you.
